Hey guys- I just wrote this post on vindicta but I thought it would also be helpful to post here- with the caveat that it is just my thoughts and experiences!

I think the kibbe system is great because its not based in making you feel like shit about yourself. Every single type has universally-considered gorgeous and beautiful women. It is also about being honest to yourself. I am about 5’0- I will NEVER be a tall supermodel. It’s just not happening. And that’s fine! Look at the women you are in the category with and see how beautiful they are. That being said, I am considered a romantic and that’s what this guide will be tailored toward. I feel I finally have a style and idea of how things work for my body which is petite and curvy. I think it does feel like a niche as curvy doesn’t necessarily mean a larger size, I am a size 6. I prefer to include real recommendations into my posts cause I feel it takes a lot of legwork out and is more helpful that way. I wouldn’t feel comfortable giving recs to people with different body types and have you buy something garbage!

Of course, is it law to not wear purple as a warm spring? No, of course not. However, it can help point you in the right direction in clothes you might be interested in buying and trying to pick the best colors for you. Finally, kibbe, color systems, and my suggestions aren’t law or things you have to do or else. Everyones different! Still, this stuff takes forever to learn and a lot of time and money to figure out and I think it helped me a ton and i hope it does for other people.
Guiding principles of Kibbe for Romantics (ripped from his book, you dont need to follow everything but i think it gives you a general idea of what to look for)

Avoid: Stiff, structured, or tailored styles (coatdress, chemise, etc.). Straight styles with no waist. Shapeless, wide, or baggy dresses.
Basics Before Dressing
As youll be able to see- I do not follow every single rule he makes, and sometimes like things he says to avoid. These rules arent law but they should make you look twice at what you wear and if it works for you and how to make it work for you and your style. I break these rules plenty- just as long as I am maintaining the structure by waist emphasis and clothes choice (high waisted bottoms).
While you don’t have to follow the materials list directly, just try to pay attention to what the clothes are made of and prioritize non-polyester clothes. Don’t buy clothes that don’t suit you or don’t fit you in the hope that it one day magically will or that you will lose the weight. If you are losing weight rapidly, then wait a little before buying expensive new clothes and wait until you get to a more stable weight for you. The key factor is always, always, always waist emphasis! In every outfit strive to have waist definition be the key component.
Shapewear- a must
Shapewear is so crucial to a the more structured hourglass look. While you should be working out, there will always be lumps and bumps that you would like to be slimmed or rounded. Shapewear will do that for you. That snatched look you see on red carpets and celebrities is a large part due to shapewear- as many admit in interviews. Shapewear has the ability to make your outfits overall look more expensive and just better on you. Now, I bought skims full price and the quality sucks- my mid thigh shorts literally ripped on a date so that was great. Honestly, I would go for spanx. I thought they were so expensive for some reason. Because Spanx is kinda the OG of shapewear brands that we think of, they have such a large library that their sale section is pretty robust so you can pretty much get a lot of pieces like high waisted panties for 10 dollars or full body-thigh suits for $40 dollars. A really easy way to get into shapewear is buying the Spanx high waisted underwear. I would highly recommend in investing in shapewear panties/boyshorts. Its not much different than other types of underwear, smooths/diminishes on lower belly fat which most women have, and I got 3 for ten dollars each. I like the “everyday shaping” ones the best since they don’t look like shapewear necessarily and are pretty comfortable to wear around. I get black in all of these since it goes with my lingerie since im garbage at matching colors so I just get it all in black. Panties and boyshorts in shapewear can be worn with pretty much every outfit (so long as youre covered on your lower stomach. For tight dresses and skirts- you probably would want to get shapewear that would smooth your thighs and butt- as Ive noticed in a newer pencil skirt I bought, just the boyshorts aint cutting it. It just looks a little lumpy without. I would highly recommend just buying sale spanx at their website- and in general try to look for styles that are still sold for full price on other parts of the site or are part of a collection, one off items aren’t as good. (ie, “retro panties” are not as good as the “everyday shaping line, boyshorts”). Find the areas where you need it too- a full body suit is expensive and you probably don’t need it- if your thighs aren’t perfectly shaped, or you have some belly fat, buy shapewear to help those areas. Shoot for a level 2/3 for max effectiveness.
General Principles
Now for the main event. You need to learn your measurements. Buy a simple measuring tape and do a full set of measurements for your body. Weight hangs so differently on us as we aren’t bone thin, so just generically buying a “small, medium, or large” just wont cut it unless you want to waste money. I have a pretty unpopular opinion- I think you have to pay more for clothes with this body type than others. Fast fashion is pretty much wasted money for us unless youre buying cheap camis and tops, even then, exercise caution. Its just not made for us. It costs a lot more money to cut clothes for curves than a pretty uniform straight shape. For this reason, I would recommend looking into vintage-reproduction clothes. Romantic body types haven’t been “in” since about the 1950s as the predominant style. While the hourglass type has always been in style, clothes that suit the romantic have not necessarily been. Tall, thin, angular are more trendy- and traditionally romantic clothes are made for non-romantic body types (polly). Therefore, I find that vintage reproduction clothes just look better on my body- wiggle dresses, cigarette pants, those are the things that look the best on me. I don’t want to look kitchy or like im wearing a costume- these cuts just look the best. The brands I pretty much only shop from now are Vixen by Micheline Pitt, La Femme en Noir (her goth brand), and I peruse other sites like Pinup girl and Stop Staring!. I use mostly micheline pitt because I feel her clothes are more “safe” for me to buy and fit my general style.
HIT UP POSHMARK for these clothes! Legit! I love buying secondhand clothes since I feel its more environmentally conscious and I love a sale. I usually look up “pin up couture,” “stop staring,” “micheline pitt,” and “la femme en noir” maybe twice a week to see if theres any good sales going on for pieces on my wishlist. Always make an offer! You might as well anyway and ive gotten bomb deals by going maybe 20% lower than the asking price on a piece.
Style
Style is kind of the most important piece here because you want to bring the principles of Kibbe into your style and pieces you love. If you love tanks with shorts, transition into more high waisted shorts (with belt?) and add a crop top or tuck a form fitting tank into the shorts. I used to be scene so I have a soft spot for that alt goth look still. I like to use Micheline Pitt for more basics (black crop with black capris with belt is life) whereas La Femme is used more for more gothy alt vibes without bordering on cartoony or cheap looking. La femme is pretty intensely boob-centric- just keep in mind (im about a 36d) if that’s something that makes you uncomfortable. Also, some of the styles in LFEN have a long vertical line with not a lot of waist emphasis is probably not for us (art deco collection for instance). I think it plays to romantic ideals great though- lace and little feminine detail is recommended for us. Just as a side recommendation, wait for sale! Legit, Micheline has sales like every other month so I just wait for that since some of the pieces get pricy. Keep in mind though the quality is always consistent and the sizing is consistent throughout the line which is great- as long as you have your measurements on hand you will have a good fit.
Jeans/ Pants/ Skirts/ Shorts
Jeans are tricky for curvieslim thick/romantics. You are pretty much in a struggle between shape and longevity (cotton) vs stretch. When you get 100% cotton jeans like a Levis 501, youre getting shape and a very long shelf life- but it isn’t really for curvy girls. Im a size 6 pretty much across the board in Levis EXCEPT for the 501s. In them, I literally go up to a size 12. TWELVE! Needless to say, I didn’t buy them. On the other hand, stretch is good to have BUT it makes the fabric last a lot less and I have destroyed so many American Eagle jeans with my thighs before I got into Levis wherein of maybe 25-30 pairs, only two have ripped in the thigh for me (I think 720s if you care, of course highest amount of stretch to cotton ratio). The golden ratio for me is about 90% cotton, 10% stretch. It gives enough construction and shape and longevity to a pair of jeans while still being comfortable and having that give. That’s a ratio that fits my fave pair of jeans, the Levis Wedgie Skinny fit which, if you can find in a non-plus size, you should at least try on. The wedgie fit is meant to look similar to a more vintage fit but it also shapes your butt and tapers off at a short length. The more common pair online is the plain Wedgie fit, which is like 98% stretch which isn’t my ideal but I do have a few. They just need to be broken in a little and follow the size chart. Wherever you buy jeans you should probably go in person if possible just to see how the stores standard jeans fit and how you like them. The golden ratio for us when it comes to jeans is, for me, high waisted + room in butt and thigh + tapered/skinny ankle. A bonus would be a lower stretch amount 15% and under I would recommend.
When it comes to regular work pants, I use Micheline Pitts cigarette pants and her capris. The fit is really good and theyre pretty flattering with the high waist emphasis and cut. And her capris! I thought all capris would make me look like a middle aged mom- hers are incredible. They give a super flattering cut and make your waist look tiny and ass look all round. I would avoid palazzo and wide cut pants- they just make me look fat. Same thing with shorts- I have Michelines and the Levis Wedgie fit shorts which have a high waist and cut off mid thigh and I think theyre pretty great, especially paired with a tight belt around the waist. Kibbe doesn’t recommend pencil skirts but I think theyre pretty hot with a long sleeve top and belt (with shapewear!). I wouldn’t necessarily recommend mini-skirts (which I love) because I personally haven’t found any that aren’t waaaaaaaay too short for me with my smaller waist and larger butt and thighs.
Tops
Crop tops are ideal for your body if you can pull them off with a high waisted short or pant. Tucking longer shirts into your pants and adding a belt to cinch the waist is a simple but effective romantic outfit. I prefer a longer sleeve, ¾ lengths looks great on romantics as well as a slightly longer short sleeve than you would see typically in fast fashion. It is recommended in kibbe to avoid oversized tops, despite how cute and comfy they are. It does make you look bigger. Lace detailing is great, corseted details, just some very femme tops look great as well
Dresses
I love a wiggle dress on a curvy girl. I think theyre so sexy and make you just look so classy but have that wow factor. I think they are hands down the best dresses for romantics. They have that built in shape that compliments our curves so nicely, and mixed with a belt and shapewear just create this beautiful look. An A-line fit and flare dress also looks nice but is a bit more “cute” than sexy.

A really easy way to get into shapewear is buying the Spanx high waisted underwear. I would highly recommend in investing in shapewear panties/boyshorts. Its not much different than other types of underwear, smooths/diminishes on lower belly fat which most women have, and I got 3 for ten dollars each. I like the “everyday shaping” ones the best since they don’t look like shapewear necessarily and are pretty comfortable to wear around. I get black in all of these since it goes with my lingerie since im garbage at matching colors so I just get it all in black. Panties and boyshorts in shapewear can be worn with pretty much every outfit (so long as youre covered on your lower stomach. For tight dresses and skirts- you probably would want to get shapewear that would smooth your thighs and butt- as Ive noticed in a newer pencil skirt I bought, just the boyshorts aint cutting it. It just looks a little lumpy without. I would highly recommend just buying sale spanx at their website- and in general try to look for styles that are still sold for full price on other parts of the site or are part of a collection, one off items aren’t as good. (ie, “retro panties” are not as good as the “everyday shaping line, boyshorts”). Find the areas where you need it too- a full body suit is expensive and you probably don’t need it- if your thighs aren’t perfectly shaped, or you have some belly fat, buy shapewear to help those areas. Shoot for a level 2/3 for max effectiveness.
General Principles
Now for the main event. You need to learn your measurements. Buy a simple measuring tape and do a full set of measurements for your body. Weight hangs so differently on us as we aren’t bone thin, so just generically buying a “small, medium, or large” just wont cut it unless you want to waste money. I have a pretty unpopular opinion- I think you have to pay more for clothes with this body type than others. Fast fashion is pretty much wasted money for us unless youre buying cheap camis and tops, even then, exercise caution. Its just not made for us. It costs a lot more money to cut clothes for curves than a pretty uniform straight shape. For this reason, I would recommend looking into vintage-reproduction clothes. Romantic body types haven’t been “in” since about the 1950s as the predominant style. While the hourglass type has always been in style, clothes that suit the romantic have not necessarily been. Tall, thin, angular are more trendy- and traditionally romantic clothes are made for non-romantic body types (polly). Therefore, I find that vintage reproduction clothes just look better on my body- wiggle dresses, cigarette pants, those are the things that look the best on me. I don’t want to look kitchy or like im wearing a costume- these cuts just look the best. The brands I pretty much only shop from now are Vixen by Micheline Pitt, La Femme en Noir (her goth brand), and I peruse other sites like Pinup girl and Stop Staring!. I use mostly micheline pitt because I feel her clothes are more “safe” for me to buy and fit my general style.
HIT UP POSHMARK for these clothes! Legit! I love buying secondhand clothes since I feel its more environmentally conscious and I love a sale. I usually look up “pin up couture,” “stop staring,” “micheline pitt,” and “la femme en noir” maybe twice a week to see if theres any good sales going on for pieces on my wishlist. Always make an offer! You might as well anyway and ive gotten bomb deals by going maybe 20% lower than the asking price on a piece.
Style
Style is kind of the most important piece here because you want to bring the principles of Kibbe into your style and pieces you love. If you love tanks with shorts, transition into more high waisted shorts (with belt?) and add a crop top or tuck a form fitting tank into the shorts. I used to be scene so I have a soft spot for that alt goth look still. I like to use Micheline Pitt for more basics (black crop with black capris with belt is life) whereas La Femme is used more for more gothy alt vibes without bordering on cartoony or cheap looking. La femme is pretty intensely boob-centric- just keep in mind (im about a 36d) if that’s something that makes you uncomfortable. Also, some of the styles in LFEN have a long vertical line with not a lot of waist emphasis is probably not for us (art deco collection for instance). I think it plays to romantic ideals great though- lace and little feminine detail is recommended for us. Just as a side recommendation, wait for sale! Legit, Micheline has sales like every other month so I just wait for that since some of the pieces get pricy. Keep in mind though the quality is always consistent and the sizing is consistent throughout the line which is great- as long as you have your measurements on hand you will have a good fit.
Jeans/ Pants/ Skirts/ Shorts
Jeans are tricky for curvieslim thick/romantics. You are pretty much in a struggle between shape and longevity (cotton) vs stretch. When you get 100% cotton jeans like a Levis 501, youre getting shape and a very long shelf life- but it isn’t really for curvy girls. Im a size 6 pretty much across the board in Levis EXCEPT for the 501s. In them, I literally go up to a size 12. TWELVE! Needless to say, I didn’t buy them. On the other hand, stretch is good to have BUT it makes the fabric last a lot less and I have destroyed so many American Eagle jeans with my thighs before I got into Levis wherein of maybe 25-30 pairs, only two have ripped in the thigh for me (I think 720s if you care, of course highest amount of stretch to cotton ratio). The golden ratio for me is about 90% cotton, 10% stretch. It gives enough construction and shape and longevity to a pair of jeans while still being comfortable and having that give. That’s a ratio that fits my fave pair of jeans, the Levis Wedgie Skinny fit which, if you can find in a non-plus size, you should at least try on. The wedgie fit is meant to look similar to a more vintage fit but it also shapes your butt and tapers off at a short length. The more common pair online is the plain Wedgie fit, which is like 98% stretch which isn’t my ideal but I do have a few. They just need to be broken in a little and follow the size chart. Wherever you buy jeans you should probably go in person if possible just to see how the stores standard jeans fit and how you like them. The golden ratio for us when it comes to jeans is, for me, high waisted + room in butt and thigh + tapered/skinny ankle. A bonus would be a lower stretch amount 15% and under I would recommend.
When it comes to regular work pants, I use Micheline Pitts cigarette pants and her capris. The fit is really good and theyre pretty flattering with the high waist emphasis and cut. And her capris! I thought all capris would make me look like a middle aged mom- hers are incredible. They give a super flattering cut and make your waist look tiny and ass look all round. I would avoid palazzo and wide cut pants- they just make me look fat. Same thing with shorts- I have Michelines and the Levis Wedgie fit shorts which have a high waist and cut off mid thigh and I think theyre pretty great, especially paired with a tight belt around the waist. Kibbe doesn’t recommend pencil skirts but I think theyre pretty hot with a long sleeve top and belt (with shapewear!). I wouldn’t necessarily recommend mini-skirts (which I love) because I personally haven’t found any that aren’t waaaaaaaay too short for me with my smaller waist and larger butt and thighs.
Tops
Crop tops are ideal for your body if you can pull them off with a high waisted short or pant. Tucking longer shirts into your pants and adding a belt to cinch the waist is a simple but effective romantic outfit. I prefer a longer sleeve, ¾ lengths looks great on romantics as well as a slightly longer short sleeve than you would see typically in fast fashion. It is recommended in kibbe to avoid oversized tops, despite how cute and comfy they are. It does make you look bigger. Lace detailing is great, corseted details, just some very femme tops look great as well
Dresses
I love a wiggle dress on a curvy girl. I think theyre so sexy and make you just look so classy but have that wow factor. I think they are hands down the best dresses for romantics. They have that built in shape that compliments our curves so nicely, and mixed with a belt and shapewear just create this beautiful look. An A-line fit and flare dress also looks nice but is a bit more “cute” than sexy.

History:

* Have breakfast or brunch on the Queen Mary (not exactly off the beaten path, but also not to be missed)
* Walk or bike down Long Beach, or book a Harbor Tour to learn more about the harbor and history of LBC
* Visit and tour Rancho Los Cerritos and/or Los Alamitos
* Walk around (or rent a boat and row around) Marine Stadium, home of Olympic rowing competitions, or watch a rowing competition (look up the rowers association or dragon boat racing competitions)
* Dinner (fancy) at Parker's Lighthouse or (less fancy) get a sunset view at the patio at Belmont Shore Brewery

Art:

* Visit MOLAA and the lesser known Pacific Islander art museum across the street.
* Grab a cup of coffee and catch some live music while admiring the art at Viento y Agua or Portfolio coffee houses
* Check out a 2nd Saturday art walk in the Arts District or First Friday's in Bixby Knolls, or visit a weekly Farmer's market (Tuesday nights at Cherry and Broadway is one)

* Rent a bike and travel the many bike paths throughout the city/beach/rivers
* Try out some instruments or record a song at Gilmore Music
* Browse records at any number of fantastic record stores
* Try Cambodian Cuisine (or any number of other amazing foods - from pho to bangers and mash to waffle sandwiches, we have it all.
* Go to the beach (seriously- not many people do)
* Visit the aquarium of the Pacific on a weekday afternoon (tip: they feed the big sharks outside at 2pm, and you can often find discounted tickets online, or see sharks and listen to live music outside on Friday's)
* Take the murder mystery paddle boat dinner cruise

Where should I live? What's x area like?

Bluff Park and Belmont Heights are about as lovely as Long Beach gets.

Bluff Heights is a really historic and charming residential neighborhood.

Alamitos Beach is gritty, charming, and has a youthful energy and a great proximity to other areas. Parking is notoriously bad here and most buildings and homes don’t come with parking.

Bixby Knolls is up towards the northwest side of the city and has some of the city’s most gorgeous Old Money residential areas, and a lot of new restaurants and businesses popping up. It almost feels like a whole other city separate from Long Beach.

The Eastern half of Long Beach (close to Cal State Long Beach) feels much more suburban and residential, and has nice areas like Los Altos and Recreation Park.

Downtown is overpriced and overrated, but it may be your thing.

Try to stay south of 4th St, and definitely south of 7th.

So much of this depends on where exactly your job is located or what vibe you want.

Is x area safe?

Long Beach is relatively safe but can change drastically block to block. Best areas to look for are about 4 blocks from the beach, Bixby Knolls, Belmont shore , east Long Beach by the university /605 freeway, and the area between signal hill / Bixby Knolls is nice.

The overall crime rate in Long Beach is 25% higher than the national average. For every 100,000 people, there are 8.86 daily crimes that occur in Long Beach. Long Beach is safer than 13% of the cities in the United States.

All right. So, I'll get back to my normal critical mode soon enough. But I'd like to take a moment to celebrate where we actually are now. A long time ago, before DK2, before Gear VR, before the first Oculus Connect, I remember being at an event and talking about my vision for virtual reality, what I wanted to see and I laid out this vision of, "I want a self-contained headset that has cameras for tracking, that could run lightweight content locally but you can still plug into a PC to run really high-powered content." And that was the fantasy six years ago, but it's exactly where we are with Quest today. And for the people that've been along for so much of this journey, it's easy to forget that most of the world has still never even seen VR and we have such magical things to show them now. So, interestingly, there is a lot of internal trepidation about the products that we released this year with Quest and Rift S. There were thoughts that Quest is too heavy, too uncomfortable, too underpowered, or too expensive, and that Rift S was kind of a step sideways, or maybe even a little back with the 80 Hz LCD screen and the problematic tracking poses, but this gave us some really valuable insights to be able to do almost direct A/B tests and it turns out that Rift S is substantially more retentive than the earlier Rift even with the exact same content, and this was like the experiment that we did with Gear VR to Go. It wasn't nearly as dramatic as Go's more than 2x increase in retention, but it was still a very meaningful point that the friction to get into and play the experiences is such a dominant force for virtual reality, where the fact that people that are used to it that set up their cameras and deal with all the little issues in USB problems... Maybe it's not a big deal for a lot of people, but statistically, it sure seems that inside-out tracking was really the right thing to do for us. And as we look at it right now, sure, Go is still a better place to watch videos and Rift S is still a better place to play Rift content, but you can see where this is going in the future where future generations of hardware should be able to do all the things better than any of the other things before and there's also quite a bit of headroom for us where we say, "We still have all these friction points with Quest and there's still all the quality and things that we can do to improve it." So, we can expect future headsets to continue to take those ratcheting steps up as a more and more retentive platform. And so, I think another thing that the Rift S showed me personally is that I was undervaluing the Rift gaming content, where when Go came out and we were seeing retention numbers almost as good as Rift from Go, I was thinking, "Well, we've got a clear path here "with a very inexpensive headset that we can get to mass market "and hopefully mass adoption faster, "and it seems to be doing pretty much as well as Rift," but with Rift S showing that there is a lot more headroom there, I think we can say that the PC experience was holding down what the value of the content was and we get a little bit better with Rift S and then a lot better for that style of content with Quest. So, Quest is, you know, by far now our most retentive hardware. It's doing extremely well for that, and that's pretty exciting. So, remote rendering is an obvious thing to do. Again, I was preaching this six years ago where it was clear that you've got things that work really well on a local headset, but there's always something that you want more power for. A typical gaming PC is maybe 40 times as powerful as the system on a chip that we've got inside the standalones. And you can always go up from there. Some of the Facebook Reality Labs demos that they do actually run with multiple tightened GPUs stuffed into one box. There's always something that you can do with more power. But it's also worth pointing out that we have some amazing experiences on Quest, on this tiny, underpowered system. You can still play some spectacular things. And that might be pointing to the fact that maybe we really were too aggressive with the minimum spec machine on PCs. You could argue that "Well, if we could do these things on a little Snapdragon chipset, "you probably could've run great Rift content on laptops "and relatively underpowered PCs without a really high-end GPU in it." Now, the developers have had to work harder and suffer a lot more to hit frame rates on Quest than they have to on Rift. That is one of the advantages of the PC, even if you're not doing spectacular graphics, sometimes it's the right thing just to make life that much easier for you. But still, there's clearly value in having the option of throwing more power at things. Now, people had been doing demos of remote rendering since all the way back in Gear VR. There were some early demos that had even cloud rendering for VR, stream to a Gear VR, but internally, we have a lot of perfectionists at Oculus and I often have arguments about value where you can look at something and say, "This is terrible for x, y, and z reason," but if people find value in it, I tend to be at the position that let people choose to do things even if other people don't think they're of a sufficiently high-quality level, but we have a lot of debates about minimum bars of quality and poisoning the well and discussions like that. And while I had been pitching "We should be doing remote rendering on Quest pretty early on," there was the general consensus internally that we needed dedicated hardware for it that either you needed 60 gigahertz Wi-Fi, or you needed display port over USB, or something to let us do something special directly and solve it with hardware. But I had held the opinion that we could do a quite good job on the existing hardware that we had without necessarily buying anything else. And the basic ideas is just you render something on the... You sense the controllers on the Quest, you send that information over to the PC where it does the normal rendering and composites it together, video-compresses it and then sends it over a link. So, everybody knows that Wi-Fi has pretty wide variability in quality and performance. You might only have a millisecond or two of latency, but it is not at all uncommon to see delays of 100-200 milliseconds, which would be really disruptive to VR experiences. So, we decided that the first step that we would take would be doing this directly-cabled experience. With USB cable, there is essentially no error rate and significant latency, no significant jitter. It's just a matter of a couple milliseconds based on when drivers wake up and do things and it was more than ample bandwidth. We're actually limited on the video decoder to around 150 megabits per second, which is just coasting on a USB 3. It should even operate on USB 2-level bandwidth. But this is the first step. This is some of us getting our foot in the door. Like, "All right, we're shipping a remote rendering experience, "but clearly, we would like this to work on Wi-Fi eventually. "And then even though we will probably never really endorse it... "Hey, if it works on Wi-Fi, "you can stream from even a remote computer over the cloud." But that is, we do not have line of site on making that a great experience for a really remote distant computer. There are architectures that you can imagine where you change the way games are rendered. So, you render your hands locally and you stream only the things that aren't changing much. But one of my real lessons from doing this for a number of years now is that getting developers to really change the way a game would be architected specifically to take advantage of something is really hard. Hardly anybody takes advantage of my precious time or players that make all the text look so good. So, I'm not super enthusiastic about doing split rendering architectures. But internally... So, the difference between what a half-dozen other people have done with the remote rendering and what we can do, because we have the internal access to everything, we can have lots of custom stuff put in on the PC side, on the compositor. On the mobile side, we've been able to peel away at least one layer of the video, kind of the overhead of working with the video codecs. The way it all stacks up, normally on Android if you're writing a normal application you write to the media codecs which then talks over to Stagefright, which talks to OpenMx IL, which talks to the kernel, which eventually talks to the Qualcomm hardware, their little Venus video processor. So, we made some changes, we peeled away the top level, the top couple of things there, so, our remote rendering talks directly to the OpenMAX driver, which helps a little bit and gives us some more control, but there's actually a lot more on the table there. Where if we can get Qualcomm to open up or cooperate a little bit more at the lowest level, I really want to get down and write custom microcode on the Venus processor, because if we can do that, then we can do some alternate architectures where instead of sending full frames buffered up over and dealing with them like we do with the reprojection normally, we could treat it essentially like a remote monitor. We could be compressing things one scan line at a time over the huge bandwidth over USB so that it's coming in just 16 scan lines ahead of where it's gonna be drawn on the Quest and given that, we could actually beat Rift S in terms of motion-to-photon's latency, because Rift S uses an LCD which is global shutter so it has to scan the whole frame in, while Quest is an OLED with rolling shutter, which means that we have the possibility of being up to almost a frameless latency. So, that's a good chunk of different work that would need to be done there. We might even be able to do it without direct cooperation from Qualcomm if we wrote some custom GPU or DSP encoding for it. But instead, we did make the decision to do this in a more forward-looking way, because we know that we want Wi-Fi support and being able to do it over more variable conditions. So, right now, it does pull the entire frame over and then reproject it with time warp just like it was a local app. So, what this means is that attitude... Moving around with your head is just as good as any local application. But if you're translating side to side or especially with the controllers, you will notice a little bit more latency on it. It's a little bit worse than Rift S. And it also means that the quality is a little bit lower for two reasons, both because, it is compressed, so it's sending it across, it's compressing it down to 150-ish megabits per second to send over the wire, and then as always happens with the time warp stuff, it winds up resampling it one more time there
where we have possibility of going directly to the screen in some other ways that would be a little bit better. Still, I'm pretty proud of what we've done. I think it's significantly the best remote rendering experience relative to a half-dozen other things that people have tried for that. And so that's a good thing. Now, there was some internal debate about how the product user experience would be. You could imagine a highly-designed approach where your Rift apps just show up in your Quest library and you launch them from there, and it just launches it on Rift and it kind of works like a Quest app that's running on higher-powered hardware, but the alternate direction is to do what we did, which is to basically treat it like a Rift Q. It is basically treating the Quest as if it was just a Rift that was plugged into your PC. There's always gonna be some things that you wanna do on your desktop using dash rather than using just the applications there and it also gives us a pretty good clarity, but there's a chance that eventually we might shift things a little bit more towards running them directly but for now, I think we've made the right call and it just turns your Quest into a Rift. It's not necessarily the best user experience in some ways, but it gives you the most flexibility by far.
Now, as we move forward into the future with Quest, it is time for me to probably give a bit of a eulogy for Gear VR.
You know, it's been announced that...
That it's not gonna be available on the future Samsung phones. So while currently the software's fully supported, the days are numbered. And I do think that we missed an opportunity here. I invested a whole lot of effort into it and it's the foundation that we've built all the mobile things off of, but looking back, it's clear that we had huge unit volumes. I put in a request for Samsung for me to be able to actually say the number of headsets and activations, and they declined. But it's a large number, it's much larger than all of our other headsets. And it had good reviews, people liked it, but it was not retentive. The retention we have, you know, Quest up here, Rift S, Rift, Go and then Gear VR is way lower. So, it was the classic leaky bucket that growth companies are advised not to pour effort into, where we did pour a lot of money into the content there. There were significant amounts of money that was spent on content. And when I would look at a spreadsheet of where all of it went and some of the apps that did almost nothing, it's kind of sad to see that the money didn't really wind up getting much in the way of returns there.
And sometimes I would complain that I felt I didn't have as much support internally, that everybody was much more excited about Rift and standalones and so on. But there's a clear lesson here with this stark contrast of how much retention that we have on the same content on Go, and this really speaks again to the importance of friction and getting into the experience where I... We had other theories like, early on, the overheats were a problem. But in retrospect, the people that were overheating their phones into VR were playing VR and were having a good time and that wasn't really driving them away. There were concerns about people draining their battery, that's still an issue, people get anxious when they're draining their phone battery which is their lifeline to the Internet and everything. Far and away, I think the biggest issue was just the friction of getting into it. And I like to think that if you could magically hold your phone up in front of your face and it just transformed into a VR headset, we'd have 95% retention, it would be super amazing, but if you have to pop your phone out of its phone case and dock it into a Gear VR and put it on, you will use it twice. And we have lots of signal of people essentially doing that.
There's things that we could imagine doing to make it a better experience. The docking was fiddly, the mounting was fiddly, there's all sorts of software things that we could have done a lot better. In fact, I think Daydream's holder was a little bit better than the Gear VR holder, because it just let the phone fit in. It didn't have any active electronics on there. They sacrificed not having a touchpad or not having an integrated IMU, for being a little bit more drop-in and stretchy-strap the thing around there. We could've conceivably made a phone holder that... If we knew the specific size of the phone, we could protrude the eye cups a little bit so it would still work with a case. It'd be heavier there and a worst ergonomic experience, but we could've at least made it work to kill out that awful friction where again... The lessons we learned from this is it's almost always better to trade things to make it easier and faster to get into the experience.
Some of the other things that we had to compromise on as we supported broader and broader ranges of phones, the holder got less and less optimal for any specific one. The very first Gear VR with the Note 4, that slotted in nicer and it seemed to just generally feel a little bit better than the later universal holders that handled everything from the tiny little A-series phones, up to the giant Note phones and it also met compromises where to let the tiny phones fit in there we had to crop down the edges of the eye cups, where the Notes and the Galaxys could've had a wider field of view there and generally worked better. So, maybe the phone holder friction really was just insurmountable, but there were a few other directions that we might have tried. One path was that really early on, we had solid data showing that people playing games with joypads were having a better time, much more retentive, much more time spent, and all of that. We knew that the little touchpad was just not a great gaming interface. Although, it's interesting now on later systems, sometimes if you just wanna watch Netflix, you regret not having the touchpad there and having to fumble for a controller at some point. But clearly, it wasn't good for long-form entertainment experiences. We talked a lot about just, "Make a gamepad the default controller there." Because not only would that let you do good VR games, it would give us the possibility of leaning into traditional Android gaming in various ways. If you just said this was Android on a big screen for a lot of things and you could play Fortnite in your giant VR room, that would have some significant value. We actually got fairly far along with this to the point of having some prototypes built and they were neat... Like another company had done this but they slot in in the front where the phone goes. So, it's a combination lens protector as well as the actual joypad holder. But the problem was, we had designed a simplified gamepad controller, because internally, there was this thought that full-on gamepads were too complicated for the broad consumer base. And I'm pretty sure I can track some of this to an early story where Brendan was raising funds early on in Oculus and he was talking to some older investor venture capitalists demoing DK1 stuff and hands him a game controller and it was clear the old guy had never held an Xbox controller in his life. I think that scarred Brendan and influenced our strategy for a while there. But the nail in the coffin was it couldn't play Minecraft. Didn't have enough buttons to play Minecraft, so what was the point of doing that controller? And we wound up doing the pointer controller, which works out reasonably well for VR and was a reasonable path towards eventually having the six degree of freedom controllers, but that was one of the paths not taken. And the other major one would've been actually nailing all the immersive video or immersive media in general right. The whole 360 photos, 180 VR, 360 VR, all of this, there's enough value there. It frustrates me because we just have not stirred that pot correctly. I mean, why don't we have the Instagram of immersive media? We have so much stuff that people are amazed when they see it, or when they see it running in the quality that it should be in. And it just seems like we've had stuff sitting on the table that we just haven't really picked up. And there's... You know, the cameras have made amazing strides. I feel guilty about this, where the cameras have gone from the very first RICOH THETA to, you know, the push-button 5K, 60 frames-per-second cameras that are available now. Just massive progress there, where we've done very little on the content production, presentation, distribution, sharing side of things for that. We still have to solve all of that for our big headset. So, despite whether gaming and entertainment, whatever is the majority application, immersive media is absolutely one of the top three applications. And we have one prototype headset that, you know, might have been, you know, significant for this, where we had one headset built with these custom super wide-angle lenses that could use the full width of one of the Note or Galaxy phones. And watching, you know, Henry or Dear Angelica or some of the Felix & Paul things. They're well-produced media. It was really pretty amazing with that. And it would have been a little bit more expensive. That's another one of the data points that we've learned as we've done some of these product experiments where, at some point, when we're in tens of millions of users, all the very low price points are really gonna matter. But as we've seen now, Gear VR went from $99 to $129 with a controller and didn't do much of anything to any of the curbs for adoption.
And the last kind of direction that got talked about a lot in the kind of weaning days of this was doing a more sophisticated plug-in headset. The idea being that, "Okay, docking the phone is a complete pain. "It is the huge friction point, especially if you've got a case. "You know, what if you just kind of wired it down to your phone?" And that has... On the one hand, you say, "Well, you could just plug a Rift S into a phone, "write all the right software and drive it there." But it doesn't feel right to me. I mean, people have different opinions on this, but at that point, you're back to the very earliest days of Gear VR with something that just barely works, overheats all the time drains the battery down a whole lot. I was actually more excited about the possibility of doing an ultra-lightweight super comfortable headset. Really lean in on something that you felt like you could wear for hours on end and just had a better screen. If you just had a better screen, and it was, you know, kind of like a super Go plugged into your phone, I thought they could still be useful.
You know, as it is, the runtime, VR shell, all of our first party apps... I mean, all of these have carried through to Go and Quest and are foundation that we're building a lot of things on. And I am super happy now that with the Go compatibility layer, we have the ability to start running some of the old content on Quest now. Now, we made a really kind of timid first step with this. There's just some of the top 50 apps that have gone through QA, that are being released now. Because there are a lot of things that you have to worry about. Mapping the inputs is the primary one. But how well it handles six degree of freedom headset and controller motion. And some apps were written in such a way that it was written before Quest existed at all. But, you started up, and because they use the APIs in, sort of, the forward compatible way, they magically have six degree of freedom headset tracking and the go controller moves around in six degree of freedom when you're running it in emulation mode. But a lot of apps have a lot of problems. Like, the floor height is done wrong so the controller is down by your feet or there is a various things that are clipped off at the edges. There are some other internal reasons why that's a little bit problematic. But I'm... But this is... You know, I do very much want it to eventually open up to the entire catalog because I do care about kind of preservation and archiving. And, you know, I would like us to be more like Microsoft than Apple in this regard. You know, every program I ever wrote for iOS is lost to the ages now since Apple disabled 32-bit support. I don't want that to happen to the earliest VR apps. I want it to be possible to have a retro VR scene 20 years from now. You know, people trying the first consumer mobile VR apps. So, I'm...
So, I do get a bit sad, kind of thinking about the twilight of our product line, but then I go play some Beat Saber and I feel better about VR today.
VR, in my mind, is supposed to be all about being in this universal platform. It should be doing everything. And I get really irritated in our internal strategy sessions when we're, like, gaming focused or talking about separate media or enterprise SKUs and different things. But the gaming is our focus now and it's where we've got some real traction to be working on. So, I'll start with that application area. And one of the things that's really become clear playing a whole lot on Quest now is that the notion of immersion in VR is somewhat at odds with a lot of the really frantic intense things that you wind up doing, where the 6DOF controllers give you sort of a physicality and intensity that no other video game gives you. But you're really not that, you know, super immersed. It's more of a lizard brain immersion level. I mean, when you're going through, just, totally in the moment, focused on everything, and you've just done something amazing that your brain hasn't even caught up with it. You feel like you're channeling John Wick, dodging around things.
But then you're kind of, like, "Okay..." You're doing all of that but you're not in the wonder of the experience. You're under the gun, sweating and stressing about all of this. While the other side of things is... When I was playing the first Vader Immortal, and I kind of walked out onto that ledge, you know, overlooking the lava fields of Mustafar, and I just literally sat down cross-legged on my floor and soaked in the experience for a while. You know, this a really amazing thing. This is sort of the magic that people imagined on VR. You know, when people were thinking about VR in the '90s, that's more what they were thinking about. You know, not so much Beat Saber or SUPERHOT. Whatever. But there's clearly value in both of these. And I think developers should think about how to kind of bridge between them in some ways. Where it's actually kind of nice in SUPERHOT. You get done, you finally clear some world and all the stress drains away a little bit. You're back in the little computer room and you're peering around, looking at things and figuring out the pacing for that. Where you have this challenge in all game designs, but I think it's a little bit more so in VR when you can really have people tuned up to a higher level than you really do anywhere else. Another thing that was a little bit of a surprise for us is Quest started off saying, internally, it was all going to be about room scale. There was a period when we were saying every funded experience was a room scale experience because that was gonna be the differentiating thing that made Quest different than anything else that people would have. But it quickly dawned on us as we were going through all of this, that, one, not only did most people in the world, most potential customers really not have a room to be able to devote to VR. And if you say, it's like, "Well, you're gonna move things for VR." That puts popping your phone out of the phone holder to shame in terms of how much friction you're gonna add to the experience. We had to back off from that and find out that most of the best experiences really are things that require only modest movement. And I was happy to hear, like, SUPERHOT devs did a blog going about the same journey of building out big things and finding out it really worked out better and at keeping it a little closer and tighter together. Now, walking around in the big spaces is absolutely amazing. It is some of the richest stuff that you can do in VR. And, like, when I was playing Red Matter, which has all this great, glorious stuff to look at... We have a big room for demoing at Oculus in Dallas, and I traced out the whole wide Guardian there. And I wanted to just walk around in here, but even with a larger area than any normal person would have available, it was really limited, where I'd walk a little bit and I'd still have to turn and re-center and go back. And if I was in a stadium-sized area, it would've just been absolutely amazing. But, you know, I think that is the lesson that walking around, unless you've got something that's happening within a few feet, it turns out not to be a great game design part, and it may push a lot of people away. And in general, on graphics design, the advice I've been giving forever on mobile stuff about, "Don't try to push too hard on the graphics." Again, Red Matter is sort of an exception that proves the rule a bit where they pushed really hard on the graphics. Similarly with, like Daedalus on Gear VR before or on Go before. But in general, I see, for every Red Matter doing great jobs with all the shaders and keeping the frame rate up, I see a hundred applications that are missing frame rate when they shouldn't be, and would be better off by sticking with something a little bit more stylized and simpler approach.
Also, I do wish people would turn down the use of Fixed Foveated Rendering. Far too many games just have that cranked up to the maximum. It's like, "More's gonna be better." And then you wind up with the really ugly bits of anything resembling text that slides into a foveated region just then looks really, really bad. Do remember you could change that, zero cost, every frame. So, you can go ahead when you pull up your UI, turn it off completely so it looks good.
The other things, again, speaking to the huge success of Beat Saber, music and audio is one of the very best things you can do in VR because we have to make these struggles about graphics. The trade-offs, your quality versus your frame rate. But you could do music perfectly and you should. This is one of the very best things you could do. Similarly, voice acting is very inexpensive quality to put onto your game. I mean, yes, you have to worry about localization, but in many cases, even foreign voice acting with subtitles is going to add a level of polish to the experience that, you know, that just miming things around really doesn't. Similarly with positional audio. A couple of things I think people are still under-using is, animation is literally free from a performance standpoint. And seeing things happening very close in front of you, especially with 6DOF tracking, that sense of a private performance of something happening right in front of you is extremely high value for things. Adding character to the things that are in your world, actually demonstrating and performing things and letting it happen as you move around, this is under-utilized in VR today. And similarly, haptics is fairly new for a lot of the developers. Adding just a little thing... I tried to point out in the app reviews that anytime you have some explosion effect or something happening visually, you should always have it tied with strong audio, and you should also tie it with some form of haptics. I mean, blend the three senses together. And don't be subtle about it. There are... You can think about... Like, you're closing your eyes, thinking about the haptics, feeling exactly how it's doing, but people aren't doing that. You need to be smacking them in the hands with the haptics when you want something to be appreciated.
And there's... All of the normal kind of gaming things, load times, cloud saves. I mean, I have literally abandoned some games that have excessively long load times. It does matter. Everybody can point to things like Fortnite that takes 1.5 minutes to load on mobile and say, "It's the most popular game in the world." Or whatever. But that's not how you build an audience. Once you've got a large audience, you can start imposing on them more for various reasons. But when you're trying to get people to get over the hump to be attached to your game, it's really important to make it quick and easy to get into the game. Similarly with things that are long intro roles. One of the games that I was reviewing in the app reviews looked really good, but it had all of these slow roll-up to things. I'm like, "I'm skipping." And they're like, "No, don't skip. "We have neat stuff to show here." If it's not happening really immediately, faster than you think it needs to... Similarly, with a lot of immersive videos like, you know... I love the Felix & Paul Cirque du Soleil videos. But they take like a minute to get into the actual good stuff going on because they want to have their credit rolls and their cool logo treatments and everything. But, no, you just want to drop users into the fun stuff immediately. Seconds matter on all that. And I do think that there's revenue left on the table for a lot of developers thinking about, you should figure out ways to have more things to sell people. In VR, you're hopefully making a powerful impression on people. If you've done something good, have something else that they can buy to support you. If they had a great time, they're probably happy to. You know, if Beat Saber had 10 music packs on Quest, I would own all of them. And you get this to the extreme case of mobile games. Free-to-play games are known for being supported by the whales. I'm a whale on ComiXology. I have, like, 9,000 comic books that I bought there.
You want to be able to find... Get something like that going in VR, where whether you split it up and you've got five add-ons, different things you can do there. And try to have them ready initially. Like, when people first play the game. If you have it coming soon, you already have lost some people by the time you release them.
Now, the question of curation for our game development is a hot topic internally again, where the argument for it is that you want people to be able to go to the store and understand that everything in here is going to be quality. That nobody is going to buy something that they regret buying or have to file a refund that leaves a bad taste in their mouth.
I expect that, you know, this will be softened a little bit.
You know, I do favor more the Wild West side of things, but there's good arguments for this either way, where people can say, you know, Nintendo, for so long, was very successful with a very curated experience.
But we do have sort of a back door with the Go compatibility stuff now, where once we do finally get kind of everything up there, you can sort of write a Quest game as a Go and make dynamic decisions about things, but you will have no exposure in the store, no exposure through any of the kind of explorer things going on. But you can still take advantage of Quest features dynamically as a Go application.
And the non-VR content is another thing that historically... You know, I've always been waving this flag of... There's a trillion dollars worth of content that was built for other screens. And I just think it's completely unreasonable to pretend that people are gonna recreate all of the value in that content in VR specific applications. And it should be the universal platform. You should be able to do everything in VR. Ideally, just configuring your workspace however you want and sourcing content from everywhere. And there will be a point where the idea of the VR headset, it should be the best screen in the house that, you know, whatever other tablets, phones, screen, TVs that you use, you should be able to have the VR version that is better in some significant way. It'll be a while before we're hitting 4K TV levels, but in terms of convenience and a lot of things you can do with it, it should be there.
You know, we've come some distance. We have a limited selection of the Android apps in our Oculus TV application.
You know, we have the streaming trifecta now with Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime. I'm really happy we've got that. And I'm very excited now that we've got Fandango now for movies, including all of the 3-D movies. We're gonna have almost every 3-D movie ever made eventually available here. And it's not there yet, but we will finally have downloaded movies back, which is something that was a horrible regression from my point of view where before the VR shell days, we had downloading in our Oculus Video app for movies and we lost it and never got it back. So, finally, that's gonna be coming back, which is nice. And, you know, a little tip with the Fandango now, you can use movies anywhere to link your iTunes account. So, you know, for me, I've got a library of movies on iTunes. I was able to, now, for the first time ever, watch them in VR like I've wanted for years and years. I'm very happy about that. Now, dedicated 2-D game streaming. You know, people talking about Stadia and things like that. I've, for years, thought that there is absolutely a future in game streaming. Now, Oculus was founded by some people coming out of Gaikai and other companies that, you know, felt burned by it, had a more negative view of it. But I do think, like the Netflix kind of transition, at some point, it's almost inevitable. And I think that VR will be an excellent client for it. Where, in many cases, I make the point that most TVs that aren't put into game mode add more latency than the Internet would to your gameplay experience. So, people, you know, in VR, we control the display, we control all of that. It should be an excellent top-of-the-line client for any kind of game streaming. And there is enormous amounts of value there. So, I'm excited about eventually getting some of that. We don't have anything close enough in the works, but those are small, tightly-focused projects that can deliver a great deal of value. And for everything else in the world, the browser is the backstop. As a web experience for when you don't have the app for something, it's not available, and I'm super proud of our browser team, it's a small team and they've done a great job of having very high performance browser that stayed up to date with IM, the Chrome compatibility for things and we have general purpose DRM almost sorted out for the browser experience so even the high end media companies that still have web DRM, that should be coming to the VR browser relatively soon. I still wish that we had some little extra extensions to the web experience so that companies could easily do things like change the 3D environment or 360 photo behind the web screen and do some basic control of the VR environment, so it's just not a floating web screen, but you can add a little bit more to it.
That kind of ties in with the fixing of immersive media where, I've shown these Lighthouse experiences, like Henry and some of the work that I've done where it can look better than people are used to seeing and just last week or so, I've been working with NextVR on doing some specialized players for some of their content and everybody is just amazed at how this can look, even at bitrate that's amenable for streaming and the other thing on that side where everybody comes down to very conservative numbers like 10, 15 megabits something, looking at the stats for our userbase on Quest, half the people have 40-plus megabits and a quarter of the people have 80-plus megabits streaming to our headsets and that's with a very conservative estimate where you do multiple simultaneous streams and it can go much higher than that. There's possibility of streaming exquisitely high quality content to our existing headsets. We are not right now close to even saturating our displays in most cases. So, there's a lot more that can be done there. Now, there are so many applications that are thin wrappers around a little bit of immersive media and that does seem wasteful because none of them do the things right, almost none of them, in terms of getting it on layers, and getting the sRGB sampling, all the picky little things there. And it does feel like we want to move towards a world where more of that is done in the web where the web browser experience is better UI than practically every third-party application. It is on a layer with sRGB filtering at the right pixel scale and if you make a web UI, it's going to look better than whatever you cobble together in Unity. But right now, the options for playing immersive video is not great on the web. The web VR players that people use as a standard really do none of the things right in terms of the high quality things. So they work, but it's not the quality experience that I want to put forward ...

  1. The Walking Dead Onslaught - Been developed by Survios developers of Sprint vector and Raw Data this is a this is a promising looking Single-player Survival game based on the AMC version of the walking dead.
    Note: this is not connected to the Walking dead game that released a few months back from Skydance
  2. Star Wars: Squadrons a Big AAA VR game from EA Single-player and multiplayer you will fly a small squad of 5 X-wings or Tie Fighters Star wars fans rejoice!
  3. Microsoft Flight Simulator While Microsoft Flight Simulator is already released VR Support is on its way expect it by the time of the Reverb G2 release.
  4. Vertigo 2 - an Indie game being developed by Zulubo Productions there original game Vertigo was one of the best early VR titles and it recently had a remaster to bring it back to modern standards, its lead(Sole?) developer Zach Tsiakalis-Brown was 16 when he made the origianl game and must have made an impression on valve as it landed him an internship where he made Knuckles Tech Demos, (and maybe worked in Alyx?)
  5. Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds - being developed by inXile Entertainment who had previously developed The Mage's Tale (and Wasteland 3) it's a team-based multiplayer shooter with PvE element it looks to be quite processing and after mage's tale I trust this to turn out well.
  6. Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond - An oculus exclusive unfortunately it is both single-player and Multiplayer, personally I am more excited for more single player VR shooters. a new trailer was released at gamescom
  7. Sniper Elite VR - Rebelion has been silent on this for a while but a AAA game non the less
  8. Gnomes & Goblins - now with a release date! 23 Sep, 2020 the original demo was released back in 2016 and was very fun it main claim of notoriety is Jon Favreau's involvement in the game.
  9. Sam and Max: This Time It’s Virtual! - recently Announced at Gamescom being developed by Happy Giant not a whole lot is known as of yet but the Sam and max IP is a favourite of mine and I hope this turns out well
  10. LOW-FI - A very ambitious project claiming a Massive open world retro-futuristic cyberpunk, it looks to have great potential but I beleive is being made by a fairly small indie team

Rhythm of the Universe: IONIA - I dont know much about it past the trailer but the graphics look good, I just wish I could carry a rhythm.

Grapple Tournament - A Multiplayer arena Shooter stylized graphics reminds me of the old Grappling Hook days of Quake.
Video Games Deluxe's game - A Subsidiary studio of Rockstar very early days, not much to say about this yet.

What's good Repfam? It's your QC god back at it again with another review and this time it’s for another Jordan 1 High to add to the collection. Ever since getting the Chicagos, I made it a plan to collect similar color-blocking Jordans and this new pickup would be the third pair. Let’s jump right in:
The Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG Game Royal is a modern-day twist on the classic black/royal’s. It became an insta-classic for any fan of the AJ1s coming in sport royal blue, black and summit white. Release date was in March of 2018 and retailed for the usual $160 in men’s sizes, and gradeschool sizes for, $120.

I found Jack Chen which a yupoo seller and thought to try him out. I’ve been on the lookout for Game Royals for a while now but my favourite LJR sellers don’t have this in stock. I chatted him a bit in Whatsapp and he gave me his yupoo site. There I saw that he has a GET batch of Game Royals which are more than decent so decided to buy a pair. Paid via Paypal and after couple days, I got QC. To be completely honest, I GL’ed the first QC which he gave me in the wee hours of the morning (so completely groggy and half-asleep) not realizing the corner stitch flaw on the pair. Still, not the end of the world so I just vibed with it.

Parcel came in double-boxed with a bubble-wrap packaging which is a standard, so nothing to write home about. Even so, some parcels came in destroyed so colour me clueless what really happen in the DHL warehouse or during transit. This pair’s box is flawless when it came in which is good. DHL only took 4 days from date pickup to deliver which is amazing. It’s good their starting to pick up pace again, making us feel there’s no pandemic going on. Sizing is the usual TTS for all Jordan 1 Highs.

Overall pretty happy with this first purchase from Jack Chen as i’ve been meaning to get Game Royals for a while. I will be collecting the Jordan 1 Highs with the Chicago-esque color blocking (i now have the Chi, RSBB and this) so expect a lot more reviews of this kind of color-blocking on the coming months. With this, I rate this AJ1 Game Royal GET batch sneaker .95:1 and I won’t hesitate to recommend Jack for AJ1s.

2020.08.22 13:27 ArmyVetBrooklynNY [New York] payment history screwed up and showing file new claim

On Wednesday i noticed I was never paid for “waived” unpaid waiting week and that my start date/last week worked was week off. I called and finally got thru and the lady was super nice and said I was right and that she would fix it and call me back. Few hours pass and I notice when I click payment history that the dates have changed so I could tell they were working on it but then I notice that it gives me option to file new claim so I thought maybe they want me to do that for more info so I did it and then she calls me back few hours later and says it’s fixed and she made me certify on phone with her for those two weeks I’m owed. She then says it will show up in my bank account in few days and I told her I filed new claim and she said to call in morning to get it removed. I call and the lady says the new claim shows it’s disqualified and that I need to speak to level 3 specialist to get it removed from website because when I now click payment online services it says I need to call to finish claim. I finally get thru to level 3 specialist and she removes it from site and says it will take few days to process. Yesterday and today, it still shows option to file new claim and when I click payment history it shows LAST YEARS claim but it also shows my payment I got last week in payment history and rest is from last year. I call them yesterday and she lady says it’s ok and that my claim from May this year is fine but that it takes few days for retro payments. Still today it shows combo of last years claim dates and last weeks payment with it. She said I should be able to still certify but being nothing is changed today and I know I can’t call, I’m nervous I won’t be able to certify tomorrow (Sunday). Anyone have similar situation they’ve been in and could let me know what to expect? I trust what lady said but still nervous. Does dept of labor still have workers or computers working on things on weekends even tho you can’t call and speak to someone?

So I've nearly run my current retro road bike into the ground and it is about time for a change. Currently I've got a 1973 Mercier Road Bike and absolutely love the feel of it, drop handle bars, old-school gear shifters (I'm not up to date on bike lingo don't slaughter me in the comments) and a pretty white frame.
I'm ready to start setting my sites on something with a lightweight frame that still gives me the feel of this old school bike as I travel around the city. I'd like to have a rack on the back for my weatherproof bag and I don't want clip-ins quite yet. I'd define myself as 70% commuter, 30% *serious* biker with a love for speed and long rides.

The way we listen to music has come full circle.
It started with Thomas Edison’s first phonograph in 1877, which played back sound from wax cylinders coated in tin foil. That quickly evolved into the vinyl record and the turntable, which eventually became a mainstay in most households. In the mid-1960s, along came cassettes and 8-track tapes, making it easy to play your favorite tunes in the comfort of your automobile. It seemed as if recorded music couldn’t possibly get any better (or, at least, any more convenient).
And then digital recording was invented, opening the door to CDs and then to digital streaming, which is at an all-time high right now, with individuals listening to more than 32 hours per week in 2017, according to Nielsen Music.
But if you think that vinyl has been relegated to the role of a niche collector’s market, you’d be quite mistaken. The Nielsen Music 2017 U.S. Music Year-End Report states that over 14 million vinyl records were sold in the United States alone that year — the highest level since 1991, according to Billboard.
You’d think that such a resurgence in popularity must have a definitive cause and effect relationship with a market event. But it turns out that the explanation isn’t quite that simple. Here are five possible reasons why vinyl is making a comeback:
1. Tangibles. Sure, subscription streaming services provide unprecedented access and convenience, but something is lost too: ownership. When you play streamed digital files through an app, you don’t own that music. On the other hand, vinyl records are physical items that you can collect, hold in your hands, purchase in person and discuss endlessly with record store clerks and fellow music lovers. Vinyl also offers other tangibles, such as album artwork and liner notes; if these things are even offered by streaming services, you better know where to click.
2. The Cool Factor. Nearly half of all current vinyl record buyers are under the age of 25, according to record industry research site MusicWatch, and with every new generation comes a new outlook on the past, present and future. Some millennials have made an art of taking dated concepts like fedoras and ponytails and making them relevant and cool again. If you doubt this, visit your local record store. Chances are you’ll spot a man bun, a flannel shirt or some other identifiable accoutrement of this popular sub-culture. Clearly, repackaging old albums and calling them retro makes them attractive to trend setters and trend chasers alike.
3. Vinyl Collectors. Serious record collectors are helping drive the rebirth of the medium: There’s something to be said for the thrill of finding a rare LP in a random cardboard box at the back of a tiny record store and being able to add it to your personal collection at home. What’s more, MusicWatch reports that 27 percent of vinyl buyers are 36 or older. That should come as no surprise, since collecting records is a means for people who grew up with vinyl to reconnect with their youth.
4. The Listening Experience. How people listen to music has definitely changed, thanks to the popularity of streaming music. Earbuds and computer speakers have come to predominate, but it’s a fair bet that vinyl lovers are still spending time and money on dedicated Hi-Fi setups in their homes. Yet having a nice set of speakers along with a quality turntable and stereo receiver is only part of the traditional experience. It’s also about sitting down and listening attentively, as opposed to the ease of playing streamed music in the background or while you’re at work. If you put on an album, it’s probably with the specific intent to sit back in your listening room and enjoy it.
5. Sound Quality. Many experts feel that the old-school analog audio provided by vinyl sounds superior to digital audio — especially the lossy (compressed) digital formats used by streaming services. It’s true that there are better digital playback formats available, such as FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec), but you’ll have to search them out specifically (and possibly pay extra for them), whereas vinyl is readily available from online sellers and at your local record store.

He did. There was a specific moment I will never forget when my dad and I were driving in his old beat up gear van and I was crying because I used to get made fun of A LOT for loving rap music as a white kid growing up, in a small hillbilly town. I was like 14 years old I think. He turned and said "Son... You can't listen to any of this. If you love what you're doing, do it unapologetically and if people make fun of you, fuck em." In the years approaching me moving to LA I also recall many convos of him saying that I'd only ever know how things would play it if I took the ride. He really gave me the courage to blindly throw myself out into the world and into the music industry with a head full of ideas and a heart full of enthusiasm.

I remember people making fun of you in middle school and high school (CVMS DHS) I’m glad to see that you followed your dream and found success! It’s been cool to hear The Nights and say, “I went to high school with that guy!” It’s also super cool to see someone brush off the haters and become a raging success. 👏 Skuzzard: I remember this too unfortunately. I also remember in high school that Nick was a super genuine person. He is clearly still very genuine to his passions and goals, which you may not be able to say the same about for most people from our “small hillbilly town”.
nickfurlong: For the record, I still love that small hillbilly town. It's what made me and keeps me grounded. That, and all the good life long friends I have from here!
How exactly are you compensated? Do publishing companies periodically mail you a check for your contributions? Is it done online? There are SO many ways to make money in the music business. None of them are easy unfortunately, and collecting can feel like walking backwards through a forest with your eyes closed. Here's the best way I can break it down for you:
In the United States there are three songwriting societies known as PROs (ASCAP, BMI, and CESAC). Step 1 is to register for one of these. Personally, I chose BMI. You will be given a member ID number for yourself as a songwriter (this is how they will pay you performance royalties). You will then create a publishing company with that same society, linked to your member ID, name it whatever you want to associate with you as the musician (think of it like your very own company name). Now, if you publish a song you and it starts generating money, then about 12 months after the song is released you will begin to see money being collected by the society you chose and paid to you in two ways, one as a songwriter to your songwriter account and one as a publisher to your publisher account. If you begin to create more songs that generate more income then I would advise looking into doing a publishing admin deal. This is where a third party company (ex: Kobalt Publishing) would ensure that the PROs are collecting ALL of the money your songs are earning. It's a HUGE industry with a lot of moving parts so it's easy to leave money on the table if you aren't careful. Another HUGE thing most people don't realize they can do is sign up for your SAG-AFTRA performing rights if you are an actual performer on a song. This + neighboring rights! Look into all of these.
Do you think for new artists/ bands that gaining exposure by constant gigging is a thing of the past? Not totally, but in some ways yes. I also think it HIGHLY depends on who you are as an artist. Do I think that somebody like Calvin Harris could tour less and continue to release music successfully? Yes. Do I think he would continue to be AS successful? Maybe, but touring definitely eliminates any extra doubt. Now an act like twentyonepilots. I don't see them NOT in an arena. I read an interview recently actually where Tyler Joseph had talked about the pressures to find a way to provide the same interactive experience in the age of COVID, and at the time they didn't really seem to know what to do. It will be very interesting to see how touring changes, if it all, in the future.
In the making of The Night, who did what? Lyrics? Song melody? Harmony? The song idea? Drop? :) I had originally written the verses down in my note pad and had a voice memo of the idea. I sent it to my producer friend Jordan who had been working with another friend he later introduced me to named Gabe. The three of us crafted a first draft of the song at Jordan's studio a couple of weeks later. Jordan and I then went to John Feldmann's studio to have the guitars done and I recorded my vocals with produceengineer Zakk Cervini. I sent that version to Ash blindly and he responded with some notes. We spent about another week going over notes he continued to send and making changes he asked for, and then sent them all of our files. Three months later I was sent a video of Tim playing The Nights live at a festival and I hadn't even heard the final cut yet!!! I was so nervous the song wouldn't come out or that it was all just smoke and mirrors but when I realized it was really happening, you bet your ass I buckled up hahaha.
Hi Nick. What was it like to perform at Tim's Tribute Concert this past December? How did you contain your emotions? It was difficult. I was a little choked up at certain moments and trying to contain myself emotionally. Pouring my heart out to a crowd of that size while our song was being played by all of those wonderful musicians in the house band made it all VERY real. I managed to make it until I got off the stage, and then I stood in the crowd with my fiance, a lot of my best friends, and all of the fans, and we just hugged, cried and watched the final moments together.
I'd love to hear about the logistics that went into the Avicii Tribute concert. The entire thing was a work of art, and I can't believe it was a one-off show, but had so many moving pieces! Can you tell us what the process was like preparing for the show? Was there an entire run-through or dress rehearsal type event beyond a soundcheck? And secondly... what was your favourite thing about Sweden in December? (in hindsight, thank goodness this concert happened pre-pandemic!) Honestly it was the most intense and fast paced thing I've ever been a part of. I flew to Stockholm four days before the show, had three rehearsals with the full band. One the day after I arrived at a rehearsal space, one the day before the show at the arena, and one final dress rehearsal before doors opened. Everyone that put that show on was the most professional at what they did, and we were all very aware backstage what we were doing this for so everyone down to the people securing the venue were bringing their A-game. I felt like a fighter about to go out to earn my world title leading up to my call time. I paced around the soccer team's locker room doing vocal warm ups while my manager, best friend Earl, and fiance watched in angst until the producers grabbed me and walked me to the stage. At that point I was literally walking on air and felt more adrenaline pumping through me than I'd ever experienced. I was being told to watch my steps because of electrical and pyro going off, and had to not only perform but stay mindful of those cues and crucial moments. For example, I told the show producer before I went out, "what if I ask the arena to raise their phones and sing the chant with me to close the song?" and she had the brilliant idea seconds before I propelled through the floor to turn my camera flash on and face it towards my thigh so that it wouldn't show through my pants, but I would effortlessly be able to take the phone out and create the moment. Also, right before I went out I had people running up and yelling things in my ear left and right, but I managed to step aside and pray to Tim, to personally thank him, and to say I would do my best to perform as if he were on that stage behind me... It was one of those nights you find yourself walking around the hotel room at 3 AM still trying to come down from the rush, but not wanting the moment to pass.
Fav thing about Sweden was the FOOD!!! I could eat meatballs with ligonberries the entire time I am there haha.
Do you ever feel like you don’t get enough credit for playing such an important role in the song? Sometimes, sure. But that's just the ego huffing and puffing. I don't mind that I'm not the center of attention in 99% of cases, because I really do enjoy the teamwork aspect of working on an album or a song and I truly understand and respect that it takes a village in most cases to have a success. If I'm demanding more credit for the writing side, I better be willing to give credit to the mixers, mastering engineer, radio promoter, etc...
what was Tim like as a friend and as a music producer? From everything I know, he was the kind of friend you want. We didn't get the chance to become very close, and I really wish we had more time once he slowed down. As a music producer he was dedicated to his craft, and at always getting better. He was fearless in pushing the envelope of his own music, and inspired by a world of taste and diversity. He also was SO prolific, and had a keen sense of identity in the way he wrote and produced a song. I found those to be some of the things that stood out the most to me.
Any plans on collaborating with Kygo? He's recently been collaborating with artists who've worked with Avicii (Zak Abel, Zac Brown, Joe Janiak, Sandro Cavazza etc). Would love to see you two make a song together. So funny you mention it haha. I actually wrote two songs on that album! I co-wrote and co-produced the Zac Brown song and co-wrote "Say You Will" with Petey and Patrick. I've also been working with Kygo's Palm Tree Crew since this year which has ultimately gotten me back into dance music a great deal.
What's your favorite song you worked on? This is such a tough question because the music I've made is like timestamps to my life. A way to recall time periods, good or bad, that lead me to a thought or a feeling that lead to a song. If I DID have to choose, I'd say most recently it's the song "Someday" I just did on Kygo's new album 'Golden Hour'
Hi! I’m an electronic music producer as well. What’s the best way to get exposure (besides spamming self-promo)? How can I get put on big playlists and get more people to see my music? That's really tough. It's such an overly saturated market these days and digital music and music distributors are now making it easier for anyone to release music. I would say just be as clever as possible in your creations and how you roll them out, build a loyal fan base that provides your project with a base level of support, and make you as an artist more interesting than everything within 100 miles of you. Knowing that people are probably not going to pay attention at first, accepting that, and choosing to work for the attention you want is what gets people to notice you IMO.
What do you feel when you reflect upon the lyrics in The Nights after Tim passed? Grateful. I am SO grateful for that experience and for the opportunity it gave me to really establish myself in the industry. I also will never forget sitting in my studio that April morning when I found out and I was just gutted. I couldn't walk past the plaque in our house without getting an ominous feeling for months. I just hated that I shared this HUGE thing with another person and he was torn out of the picture before I could really share how much that meant to me with him. Today though, I am nothing but grateful for that song and for the work he put in during his time here with us.
What’s the record you’re working on at home about? I started writing an album of songs that I am writing ironically as fun summer songs, but they're all sort of metaphors with deeper meaning highlighting the heat of living in America right now, so to speak. I'm producing it to be a lot more modern and in your face, with a lot of dark /industrial / grunge undertones. Excited to actually share some soon!
Do you ever have prolonged periods of writer's block? Do you ever get too critical of your work causing you to abandon a song/idea? Yes and yes. So normal. My longest I think was 7 months with just folders and folders of bad ideas haha. That sentence in and of itself tells you everything you need to know. Best way I've learned to deal with it is to pay attention to my life and make sure I'm not too stressed out in other aspects, or that I'm not working too much and not giving myself time off, etc.. Stay self-aware, and don't force creativity. It's like walking on a broken ankle.
What was it like working with Walk the Moon? Are they as positive and good of people as they come across in shows and on social media? Which songs did you work on? I have only ever worked with Nicholas, but he is definitely such an insanely talented, fun loving guy and a great energy to be around. I know all of those guys are super talented though and a good hang. I worked on Back 2 U with Steve Aoki and Boehm and we also wrote a song for Kygo and Zac Brown together as well.
hello first i want u to know that i really love “The Night”, i want to ask you how what its feel like that your vocal is uncredited in this song, so not many people can discover you. (for me example, i knew you after your tribute performance). is there another song with you as uncredited vocal?? Thanks for your question! I am credited on the song for vocals and songwriting, but what I think you want to know is if it bothers me that I'm not a featured artist vocally. It definitely doesn't. To me, "The Nights" was always much bigger than any one of us. It was a story that felt like all of us when we made it. I haven't done any other uncredited vocal work, but you can view most of my other work on my web-site. I've also begun to realize that there are a few people who would enjoy me putting out a project, so I've taken that to heart and started working on a musical piece of me to leave in the world.
How did you get involved with working with 311 on Voyager? Can you share what your experience was like during your time working with them? I've known Nick Hexum for the longest time so when they began working with John Feldmann, another long time friend and collaborator who brings me in to write a lot, he suggested it.
Edit: Forgot to answer second question... I LOVE working with those guys. Nothing but good energy. Writing with them was like going to hang with your boys for three hours and at the end you have a song to show for it.
Do you ever get writers block? If so, how do you get past it? DO I EVER!... In my experience with writer's block it's either because I'm working too much or I'm just not inspired musically. In most cases it lasts a few weeks because I've learned how to push through it, but in severe cases I'll stare at my Pro Tools for months and hate everything I start before I can even figure out what it is. The trick is, get up, walk away. Go do something else, and come back to it. If it still isn't clicking, move on and come back to it later. The only thing worse than not having an idea is forcing one IMO.
What are some useful tips that can be used to write a some good lyrics? Besides the obvious ones Think what you wanna say. Now try to say it in ways that nobody else has before that you know of. Challenge yourself to try and write the song almost as if you're solving a puzzle poetically.
Of people you worked with, who used too much chain compression in their bass? Definitely me hahahahaha.
If you could go back in time and give a younger version of yourself one piece of key advice, what would it be? Not to be so hard on myself. I'm starting to get to an age where I'm a lot more confident and comfortable in myself. The music industry can definitely instill a lot of insecurity in you as a young person, so it's so important to remember why you're doing it and not who you're doing it for.
Never heard the song.. Great, now I am getting all teary-eye'd. My pops passed away a few years ago, so this hit me a bit hard. How the hell am I going to get back to work now? (BTW, lovely song.) I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my mom a little over 8 years ago so I know the emotional bubble up all too well haha. Sending my love to you and your family and thank you for sharing!

irst things first, your performance at the tribute concert was amazing! How was it like to work with Tim? How was he as a producer? How much time did it take to create the absolute banger that was The Nights? Any other collabs you did with him? Thank you so much! What an unforgettable experience for all of us. We never got to work one on one believe it or not. We did everything remote at that time as his itinerary was seemingly non-stop at that time. He was a magician though. When I listen back to the demo vs the actual recording you can very easily hear the magic in his contributions. That was the only one we ever did together.
I am a longtime 311 fan and saw your name credited on some of their songs on their last album. I see you have already answered how you got involved with them, but can you walk us through your specific contribution to a song or 2? Sure. The first song we wrote was "Dodging Raindrops" at John Feldmann's house. We sat around the kitchen table and drank coffees while John played guitar and we all took turns improvising lyric and melody ideas. Once we had a little working lyric and idea we threw it down in John's studio and Nick and Aaron started recording that day. It was very collaborative. Then for a totally different process on "Space and Time," Nick sent me the instrumental on e-mail and I recorded a little scratch demo of a song idea. He cherry picked some of the lyrical and melody parts he liked out of my ideas and then ran it. Such a fun and easy going process. No stress when I'm working with those dudes!
If you wrote it, performed vocals, and produced it, why is it not "The Nights" by Nicholas Furlong? Because I wrote it to pitch to other artists, since that's what I do as a writeproducer. My vocals were originally a demo reference, and when I sent to Avicii they just decided to keep me on. I even asked about possibly having someone else sing it with a noteworthy name and they declined. So I decided rather than "who the hell is this guy" being the focus, I'd just let the focus lie on Avicii putting out a new song, and not get all bent about not being a featured artist. Just wasn't as important to me to be the big cheese as to others I guess.
I’ve always wondered , do famous ppl use or have access to their social media? Like are they actually opening their social Apps and looking at comments , dm’s etc it is it more just a branding tool? Also, what’s something that “regular” people do around famous ppl that’s really cringy? What’s something they do that’s interpreted as chill? I never know how to act around famous ppl. Like - is the polite thing to just treat them as anybody else? People are more than their accomplishments and social status. Just remember that knowing OF somebody doesn't mean actually knowing them. The more blatantly obvious you make it, the more uncomfortable it will be for everyone.
What artists are some of your biggest musical inspirations? These vary from time to time but some of the staples that never change would be 2Pac, Kurt Cobain, Trent Reznor, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mark Ronson, Quincy Jones, and Jose Gonzalez off the top of my head.
Hi Nick! I saw that you said that you collaborate a lot remotely, so have you felt an impact in regards to your songwriting/production process at all due to Covid while working on your new record? Or is it pretty much business as normal for you? Thanks! In some ways it's business as normal. I'm still very capable of getting the work done, but a LOT of the magic I love in making music is in the collaboration that takes place in the room. It just isn't the same on Zoom haha. I'm in talks now to possibly produce another Papa Roach album and we are talking about doing a test and then recording remote while quarantining to be able to achieve that "in the room" magic.
How are you faring after aviccis death? How are you honoring his memory? I am continuing to do exactly what we glorified in our song. To live my life to the absolute fullest and find ways to really love your purpose daily. Maybe you don't have a lot of money, or you live in an area where there isn't much going on... It never meant copy this guy's lifestyle or passion... It meant find your own, and then never stop tangling with that.

How much of “The nights” did you create, what was Tim’s influence in this track? Did you send him a demo without a drop lead? Did he write any lyrics for it? Thanks so much for this! The song was pretty much done other than the drop when I sent it to Ash.
Do you accept lyrics and instrumental tracks instead of full demos from people online , since I can’t sing very well? I definitely listen to instrumental submissions but I don't really take lyric submissions. That's just something I prefer to keep sacred to my own story. Even if I'm co-writing, part of my identity is in the pot and that's what makes it feel a little more like a piece of me.
What inspires you when writing lyrics? Do you have a favorite song you've heard this year? A lot of my writing is really personal. I love visualizing my songs like a story being read aloud to a room of people. I can be very OCD when it comes to lyrics not making sense next to each other, ESPECIALLY a chorus. One of my favorite songs right now is "People" by the 1975.

Whats your favourite part in the industry you work in? The stuff like this. All of the tough stuff is in the creating, and networking, and perseverance. The part where you get to just enjoy the creation with others, and then talk about why we love this wonderful thing called music together and bond over the songs that helped us through bad times or remind us of great times, THAT is my favorite part.
The Nights was so great, but I have not heard you on any other tracks! Is there any reason why? Also, have you ever considered writing for Hip Hop or R&B? I haven't done too many features, as I have always sort of enjoyed being a behind the scenes guy. I did a feature once with Steve Aoki and Rune RK called "Bring You To Life" that was released a few years ago. I'm definitely keen on doing more, and especially releasing my own project finally.
2 Questions: Did you have any fun experiences working for Aioki or Papa Roach, like hanging out with them or was it all just business? How do celebrities even contact you? Are they noticing you on the world stage and think ,,damn, I need that guy to help me,, or do you apply for their cooperation? AB, SO, LUTELY!!! I love those guys! Aoki and I performed at the Shrine Expo in 2013 and broke two Guinness World Records. We had some great talks in the interim of all the chaos. Also Papa Roach is like an extended family to me now. When you spend enough time with somebody doing something as personal as making music, you definitely start to feel like a family.
I don't think they seek me, and I don't seek them. Paths just cross as they do at times, and I follow my instincts if the passion is there.

How did you get your start? And what brought you to where you are now? I had the determination to be somebody that mattered in the world of music, and a lot of people telling me I couldn't was the driving force.
Do you ever just play music for fun without any other goals or without recording it? What style music do you like to play to yourself? All the time!!! I love doing this. It's such a healthy exercise to keep your creative juices going. I have hard drives of so many songs, some REALLY good, some God awful, that will probably only see the light of day amongst family, friends, and peers because they were just impulse ideas for fun. As for style, I am definitely a melting pot since I listen to pretty much every genre and find inspiration in different parts of each.
Are you currently working on any fun collaborations you can share? One of my favorite ones recently is a song I wrote with Nicholas Petricca of WALK THE MOON that Zac Brown sang vocals on for Kygo's new album. Talk about a room full of extraordinary talent haha. I felt pretty honored to be in that company. Another is a song I wrote and co-produced called "Supremacy" for a band named FEVER 333. I did that one with John Feldmann, Travis Barker, and with a little help from the punk rock queen Debbie Harry for letting us reimagine her song "Rapture"
What do you think about The Days and do you have any relation in the making of it? I personally preferred the Brandon Flowers version because I am a huge fan of The Killers. Unbias opinion though, it's a beautiful song! The first time I heard him playing the demo out in his live shows I just remember it putting me and one of my best friends who is an avid Avicii fans in the best mood.

What DAW(s) do you find you and/or your collaborators working with most of the time? I use Pro Tools and have always been on that grind. The others I think I come across the most are Cubase and Ableton. If I had to make a switch I'd go to Cubase because I think it's just better for tracking live instruments and vocals. Ableton for programming is AWESOME, just not the best for editing IMO.
Would you collaborate with Kygo on any future projects? So funny I keep seeing this question. I actually worked on both "Someday" and "Say You Will" from his latest 'Golden Hour' album!

Did you play The Nights for your dad? What was his reaction? I did. He was very aware of the entire process. When the record was certified Gold in the US by the RIAA I ordered him a plaque in his name to fulfill his lifelong dream of having a gold record.
musicians like you are earning money like a puzzle, a little bit here, a bit of publishing there, a little session fee there. how would you say your average salary is combined of? what are some ingredients that pay way more/less than one would expect? This is such a technical and GOOD question, so thank you. In my personal experience I would say that areas like mechanical royalties and neighboring rights are where a bulk of additional money is made. The biggest issue with publishing is that there are lesser collection amounts in the digital streaming era, and the time it takes to collect is at least 12 months after your release begins earning.
Hi! We grew up in the same town, it’s crazy to see you on the front page of Reddit. I’ve always been really interested in working on the business side of the music industry (A& marketing) and generally fascinated by songwriting. Just wanted to let you know that I’ve admired your career and always seen you as an example that it IS possible, even if you start out in small town NV. :) I’m just starting out in the professional world but hopeful I’ll find my way to music in some capacity. We all gotta pull ourselves from the mud, being from a small town just means your mud might be a little deeper. If you push yourself towards that trajectory I have no doubt that we'll cross paths one day. Network, network, network. Do your research. Know who works with who in the industry. Familiarize yourself with all things industry related. Do not be afraid to ask questions or "feel" stupid for not knowing things. I have been doing this for 11 years and I honestly still have no idea what I am doing, I just keep showing up and working to get better haha.
I've heard some artists say that their inspiration comes from some kind of invisible thing outside themselves, making it sound to me like some sort of spiritual experience. Have you ever experienced anything like that, as an artist? I've felt that only two times in my life. One time when I made a song that was inspired by the Kurt Cobain 'Montage of Heck' documentary, and another when I spent a week working at the C Room in Abbey Road. The music I left with sounded to me like somebody else spent the week writing songs in my body.

Do you ever feel isolated? People obviously know who you are, I don't listen to music and even I know you. Do you ever feel like people treat you differently and how has that affected you, if so? I only ever experienced a little bit of this after "The Nights." It's easy to let your mind get carried away when you work in any sort of high profile industry. I think reading too much into that stuff is really unhealthy though. Unless you're some mega superstar, I don't think people really care THAT much.
Is Soundcloud the best way to promote music from new producers? Trying to get back in the game. Definitely not. Get yourself a Tunecore and release some stuff on Spotify. Create an artist page and showcase your talents. The professionalism of sending THAT link over a soundcloud is unmatchable.

What's the background thought over the song "The Nights" how the lyrics for that song came in your head? The conversations I grew up having with my dad as a kid with stars in my eyes... And the feeling of doing exactly what I said I was going to, making music and traveling the world doing what I love to do, and what he encouraged me to stick with.
Do you earn more if a song you helped with gets famous? The more people buy and stream the song, the more income the song generates, so yes.
You say you got teased for liking rap in a small hillbilly town. I’m genuinely curious if you liked Tupac? His writing style was beautiful. I immediately thought if he may have had a positive influence on your writing. ABSOLUTELY. He was hands down my biggest influence as a kid. Hence why nobody understood it. I learned so much about black American culture and what the struggle and the streets were really about from that. My mom also grew up in Richmond, CA so I had her explaining things in the music and driving me through her old hoods as a kid to appreciate what Pac was saying and to understand that he wasn’t glorifying these things, he was talking about that life experience. Matching his cadence, style, and rhythm when I’d sing along to his music were what taught me to ride a beat when I started writing my own music.
Hey Nick, thank you for doing this! As an aspiring songwriter, I do have a couple of questions: First, what is the best way to self-produce? At the moment, I'm looking for programs that I can use to arrange rough demos for some of my songs. Also, I'm curious how you get inspired to write music. Often I'll just find inspirations at random times, but is there a way to get these inspirations more often? I'd say try some demos of software to find what works for you, also maybe try to use Splice to get the hang of a process or find obscure and cool samples to make your own. There is ZERO trick to inspiration. No action, or process, or pill that will work universally. What works for some, doesn't for others. This is why it's so important to find what is inspiring specifically for you.
Hey Nick! I'm learning guitar. I just like the sound of it and play random things in open tunings. I really want to understand it better. Is there any good way of learning? ps: I like finger picking and trying to learn ocean by john butler and few other songs of him. Honestly, just practice practice and more practice. I don't play any instruments traditionally. Everything I play is by ear, sometimes well, sometimes barely good enough to get by. The main thing is, I'm chucking shit around my studio to make cool noises and record cool parts and having so much fun doing it.
What is the most exciting part about working with someone on a track? How long does it take for a song to be finished normally? The difference of perspective in a collaboration is really cool for me. I get to see how somebody else might envision a song sounding while it's being made. It depends. Sometimes it's done in an hour and we all enjoy the rest of our day, or it takes 8 hours, and multiple days.
What advice would you give to people from countries where music isn't as mainstream and an established profession who still want to involved in some way? I know it sounds crazy, but I would personally probably dream as big as building a team of creatives and executives to create some sort of musical coalition and try to establish a big interest in that region.
What are some workflow, and general productivity tips you could give to a young music producer? Keep a 4D work flow... 4Ds are deleting, delegating, deferring, and doing. Either do the job because you know you can do it well, delegate others to help you finish the job, defer the job to another, or simply delete the opportunity if you cannot deliver.

No idea you had work with All Time Low, what have you done with them? I co-wrote "Runaways" and "Don't You Go" from Future Hearts, and then co-wrote and co-produced "Dirty Laundry", "Nice2KnoU", "Nightmares", and "Afterglow" on Last Young Renegade.
What would you say was your first big break? I think starting by working under Ryan Tedder's wing definitely helped beef up my chops, and then I'd say maybe 5 Seconds of Summer's debut album was my biggest mainstream success.
Since how long have you like music, and how did you pursue your current career? I knew I wanted to make music from the age of about 15, so I started then and was professionally working at it by age 23.
What music did you collaborate with blink-182 on? I wrote a song with the guys called "Good Old Days" that was released on the California Deluxe.
Why does your painting look like a yu-gi-yoh card? My fiancé painted it randomly and I just loved it so I put it up in my home studio.

Hi Nick. HUGE fan here! Hey who makes your favorite VST instruments and plugins? Do you use any as 'workhorse' channels, or do you just use acoustics (piano, guitar etc.) to get something down solid and then graduate from there based on feel? Also, for adding vocals --what is your approach to developing melody? Do you go by heart until you find something that feels right or are you more methodical (picking a mode, playing around with melodies on piano beforehand etc.) Sorry for the detail but I want to steal your secrets! Haha just kidding (not really.) Thanks Fuzzlewhack!
I've been trying to do a lot more with hardware to get imperfections in my recordings or happy accidents as we like to call them. If I'm using VST instruments I'm using Omnisphere, Diva, Serum, Kontakt with my own sample library, or PLAY (for East West orchestra stuff). As far as plugins I'm really into right now, RC-20 Retro Color and FutzBox. Thank me later ;)
Edit: To answer your question about melody. I just kind of hear something in my head and tinker with it and try singing ideas over it or whatever. Sometimes I only hear chords and I can't for the life of me hear a top line melody, but other times I have an entire song mapped out in my head and I sound like some sort of manic lunatic trying to get it all out of my head and into the computer without losing the vision.
What was it like working with 311? Did you all smoke anything while recording? We didn't. Just had a good time making music with buds!
Hi Nicholas, I love "The Nights" it is one of my all time favourites! Who approached who at the start and how long did you guys spend on the song? I approached Ash, and we spent about three months making it til it was in it's final state.
Hey Nick! What’s your song writing process? I really want to make music but find it so hard to write catchy hooks, and choruses! Any tips? Math! Repetition in the right places, bravery in others. A hook for me is a reflex. When I sing something and my body physically leans into it and I have a smile on my face then I know I am chasing the right dragon.
I'm an aspiring music producer, and i find it strange that some artists work with producers and release their songs under their own name and brand, but other artists work with producers and release songs under the producer's name.. Could you enlighten me? Is it just "whoever has a larger audience"? Not really. I think people fail to realize that producers and songwriters LOVE doing what they do, but being an artist means touring it all, the radio morning shows, the promo and press, it’s such a different grind and hard to stay writing and creating in those environments. I decided 11 years ago that sharing my music with the world meant sharing it with other collaborators who put their own touch on the work and then it releases as a part of something bigger than just a self-contained song. One of my favorite things about co-writing is discovering all of the things you wouldn’t have done creatively that others suggested. To me, not being the face of my songs isn’t a big deal because it isn’t and has never been about that. It’s about seeing the song go the distance and the message be received and cherished by so many. THAT feeling is better than any pat on the head.

Howdy there, I’m Grant! I’ve posted around here a few times in the past and haven’t had success yet. I'd been going through a really rough time this year. I had had to take off from college for mental health reasons and my physical and mental health have really declined because of depression, med changes, and eating disorder stuff hitting me hard. I had really regressed and have become a home shut in (pre-quarantine) and of course, the world is unfortunately not doing great right now for obvious reasons. The pandemic has definitely affected my mental health, and it's hard to connect with others right now, especially as someone who's already isolated socially to begin with. Things were especially rough for me because I was going through med changes and I'd felt horribly ill lately. Depression had really been grating on me physically. After some med changes, I'm just getting back to the point where I can function and feel normal and I'm starting to build my self-esteem back up! :) I'm feeling a bit self confident again!
I’m really looking for a serious relationship. I haven't really had any luck with dating apps/sites. I love saying and doing really cheesy romantic stuff with a partner. My love languages are definitely words of affirmation and physical affection. I feel like I need someone really gentle and tender because I’m super sensitive and deal with a lot of mental health issues. I have depression, severe anxiety to the point I’ve had to have a colonoscopy because of the physical effects anxiety has had on my body, OCD, bipolar 2 or major depressive disorder (I've had conflicting diagnoses with different psychiatrists, I get these severe depressive episodes and basically have an existential crisis every other day), eating disorders, body image issues, self-harm stuff, and more. My physical health lately has had problems from me overexerting myself and often I end up asleep more than I'm awake on a 24 hour period because I physically wear myself out and anxiety often takes a toll on me physically as well. Also, as a disclaimer, I still live at home, and I dunno, I’m really ashamed of that and think of how successful other people my age are. I just turned 21 and I’m really upset about it and dreading it because I feel as if time is passing me by too quickly and that I feel overwhelmed and unprepared for adult responsibilities and that I have nothing going for me. That being said, I've been trying to study a foreign language as a goal to motivate me and give me something to work towards.
I would say I’m really determined and hard-working, probably to a fault (I get periods of physical exhaustion). I work out my body really hard physically and take my path towards becoming a teacher seriously. I’m always open and honest with my emotions and I guess I’m really good about showing my gentle side. I love cute things, animals, and displays of affection. Toxic masculinity has had a huge impact on my life and I really hate it. A lot of people have described me as having a “pure” or “innocent” vibe alongside being charmingly dorky, so you might find that aspect of me cute. I’m always around to talk and love calling. I can probably make you laugh with bad jokes or tell you about some weird or obscure fact. I’m really affectionate and I’ve been told I’m good at cuddling. I really like gentle physical affection. I really want to sleep with you, and I mean literally fall asleep with someone. I am incredibly passionate about nerdy things and love to analyze, discuss, and ramble about them.
Here’s some other miscellaneous info about me, including hobbies and interests! I’m 5’ 6”, Pisces, a leftist, and an atheist, though if you’re spiritual or religious, don’t shy away! As long as you’re not some homophobic fundamentalist, I’m still interested in learning about your beliefs. I’ve gotten really good at cooking and I can make you stuff! My favorite food is brussel sprouts or pink lady apples, and I am very much an apple elitist and have made a tier list of the different apple varieties. I love anime, manga, video games (I collect retro games and especially love Nintendo stuff and JRPGs! Also, I'm good at SNK fighting games), making Gunpla kits, cosplaying, running and working out, horror films, watching sports (Atlanta teams all the way, baseball is my absolute favorite sport), podcasts, discussing conspiracy theories (my personal theory is that the “close door” button on an elevator is just a placebo), and I used to do a lot of geocaching. I just got Tekken 7 and Soulcalibur VI. I'm trying to "git gud" at fighting games as of late. I play on FightCade as well. I have a really dumb sense of humor. I love surreal stuff (Regular Show is one of my favorite shows ever) and just laughing at goofy and bizarre stuff. Nathan For You encapsulates my sense of humor well. I’ve been rewatching The Super Mario Bros. Show to follow along with a podcast and I’ve been laughing so much at its insanity. Some of my favorite podcasts are Unpopular Opinion, Retronauts, Watch Out For Fireballs, Talking Simpsons/What a Cartoon!, and Podcast: The Ride. I very much enjoy watching awful stuff for fun. I'm a massive Simpsons nerd and I also love King of the Hill to death and am watching Futurama for the first time as of late.
Distance isn’t an issue for me! I’m super committed to meeting you in person if/when the time comes, and I definitely can make accommodations to make it happen. Ah, 4chan. If there's one thing impressive about it, it's how people who are in such an insular, small community can spend so many time flinging insults at one another for perceived slights. /v is no exception to this. As you can already tell, it's an imageboard dedicated to the discussion of retro games - currently, everything up to the release of the Sega Dreamcast, as according to the board sticky. This rule has been in place since 2014, and has had no alterations up to this point. This has always caused some level of controversy on the board, due to fans of sixth gen consoles (PS2/GC/aforementioned Dreamcast/XB), but not nearly as much in the past year or so.
The common debates around this topic relate to the power of certain consoles, the intent for online play and DLC, and the actual definition of retro. A great example is discussion of the Game Boy Advance. Released in 2001, it's more or less a portable SNES in terms of console power and design philosophy when it comes to released games - that is to say, mostly JRPGs, platformers and the like - anything that requires 3D isn't going to be on here. A couple of anons have spent the past couple of months repetitively posting GBA '''discussion''' threads based around ports and remakes (which are allowed on /v) in a thinly veiled attempt to 1. get discussion of original GBA games going, and 2. stir up some juicy drama. Example A here.
A large amount of the counterplay to the validity of the discussion of the GBA on /v is the console release date. Arguers will point out that according to the sticky, /v is for the discussion of consoles and platforms released before 2000. However, the counter-counterpoint to this refers to the line "With the release of the 8th generation of consoles", implying that there is some sort of time factor to whether something should be considered retro.
If you're saying to yourself "this seems completely arbitrary!" you're absolutely correct. We haven't even started proper yet. Another common cause for 'debate' is the GameCube. Example A, Example B. Largely because the console is viewed as more of a relic of fifth gen game design on better hardware, with online play being a rarity and still intended for use on CRTs. However, a lot less people are keen on discussing it on /v, commonly pointing to the influx of SSBM and other first-party Nintendo threads on /v/ as an example of it not really being a forgotten, long-outdated console; still having plenty of relevance in a modern age.
The recent addition of the boards /vrpg/ and /vmg/, dedicated to RPGs and mobile games respectively, by current site owner hiroyuki has added fuel to the fire. /v2k/ as a board for sixth-gen discussion has been a fairly common suggestion as a form of 'compromise' to give people space to discuss the Gamecube, XBox and PS2 without it drowning out regular /v discussions, and even the idea of moving fifth-gen consoles there so strictly 2D platforms are the only ones left on /v. Now that these 'containment' boards have been added to declutter /v/, people have been making fun of sixth gen consoleposters for getting 'cucked' out of a board by gacha gamers and the like. These threads get posted often, and get deleted quickly. Example A, Example B
The release of the PS5 and XBSX at the end of this year will surely add yet even more fuel to the fire of this entirely trite flamewar, regardless of whether sixth gen consoles are accepted on the board or not. I'll post an update to this next year, and in the meantime I'll be sitting in my bed, getting mad at people who can actually find decent quality CRTs for their old consoles. I just want to play PS1 games without them looking like sharp hot garbage on the typical LCD screen, dammit, but there's nothing around here apart from burnt-in Panasonic CRTs from the boomers who were glued to it watching footy and televangelical programs.
